Labour movement no fan of temporary foreign worker program

EDMONTON – Canadian governments have long used temporary foreign workers to shore up labour markets during economic boom times, but advocates disagree about the impact of such programs.

The federal government on Monday announced changes to Alberta’s temporary foreign worker pilot program, which allows companies to hire some skilled tradespeople without having to prove that there are no Canadians to fill the jobs.

Alberta is expected to experience severe labour shortages in the coming years, with some government estimates suggesting the province could be short more than 100,000 workers. The program is expected to help address that shortage.
